A Flash of Blonde

GRIFFIN

The second Savannah said she had a crisis, I felt it—right in the middle of my chest.

It made me realize that I’d drop anything, do anything, to help her out. I was in dangerous territory, but I wasn’t turning my back on her…or Harley.

I want to maim that guy for driving Harley out of her own home. If he’s touched her, he deserves to be pummeled. That kind of stuff makes me sick. The whole objectifying women thing. Nonconsensual sex. It’s wrong on so many levels. Some things get to me more than others, and that’s one of them. I just can’t tolerate assholes with no respect.

I swallow as I drive the main road hunting for Harley.

I’ve been at it for nearly an hour, checking in with Savannah every ten minutes or so. She’s contacted Aidan and clued him in. Harley’s friend Jed has had no luck with the douchebag boyfriend, so we’re all just roaming Ryder Bay and hoping she hasn’t hitched a ride out of town already.

I’m actually out of Ryder Bay. I’ve cruised north and am wondering how far I should go before I turn back.

And that’s when I spot her.

A flash of blonde.

She’s walking on the edge of the road, right against the barrier, her arms crossed, a bag on her back, her shoulders hunched.

As soon as she hears me, she sticks out her thumb and my gut sinks. She’s hitching a ride. Shit, I could be anybody. What the hell is she doing?

I slow the truck and pull up beside her, winding down my window.

She glances at me, blinks in surprise, then asks, “You heading out of town?”

“Nope.” I shake my head. “Just coming to get you.”

She scowls and spins on her heel, storming away from me. I lightly rev and give chase, my truck sputtering and coughing as I amble along beside her.

“I’m not going home,” she growls.

“I’m not taking you home.”

This stops her. With a swift jerk, she turns to face me, resting her hand on the edge of my window and silently asking for an explanation.

“Savannah’s looking for you. Jed told her about Bryson. She said you could stay with her.”

She shudders, then starts blinking. She’s fighting tears and my heart gives a little squeeze. She looks so incredibly vulnerable right now. “Does Aidan know?”

“Yeah,” I softly murmur, pulling out my phone and then tipping my head to the side. “Get in.”

She crosses her arms, her lips trembling as she tries to be stubborn.

I roll my eyes with a sigh and lift the phone to my ear.

“Any luck?” Savannah’s sounding tired and stressed. I’m glad I can do something about one of those things.

“I found her.”

“Oh, thank God.”

A smile flickers across my face as I glance at Harley. “But she’s not getting in my truck.”

“What?” Savannah huffs, then puts on one of the best ‘mother’ voices I’ve ever heard. “You tell her to get in or she’ll have me to deal with! I’ll meet you at my place.” She gives me the address and I can’t help a little snicker as I hang up the phone.
